What Is a Standard 11 Course?
A Standard 11 is a nationally recognised induction required by law to work on Queensland coal mine sites. It covers six or seven core competencies from the RII training package, including first aid, risk assessment, and emergency response. Completing the induction earns you an S11 ticket, also known as your S11 mining card, which confirms you are cleared to start on site.
Multiple S11 variants exist because the requirements differ by mine type. If you are heading to a surface site you will need the Standard 11 surface induction, or the Standard 11 surface and underground course if you will be working underground as well. When your ticket is due, we also run a Standard 11 surface refresher and an underground refresher add-on.
A recognised Standard 11 is accepted across Queensland coal mine sites. It meets the requirements set by the Coal Mines Safety and Health Advisory Committee.

Who Needs It?
Standard 11 is required for anyone starting work on a Queensland mine site.
- First-time mine workers needing their initial Standard 11 before starting on site
- Workers moving to a different mine type who need the relevant S11 variant
- Workers whose certificate has expired and need to renew to stay compliant
- Contractors starting on a new Queensland mine site

Have Questions? We're here to Help
Here are answers to some commonly asked questions about our mining courses. What is a Standard 11 course?
A Standard 11 course is the mandatory mining induction required to work on a Queensland coal mine site. It covers six or seven core competencies from the RII training package, including first aid, risk assessment, and emergency response. Completing the program earns you a Standard 11 certificate QLD mine sites accept as proof of compliance.
What are the different types of Standard 11 courses?
We offer five Standard 11 courses: Standard 11 Surface & Underground Mining Training Combo, Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction, Standard 11 Refresher – Surface & Underground, Standard 11 Surface Refresher, and Refresher Standard 11 Underground Add-On. The right course depends on your mine type and whether you are completing an initial induction or a refresher.
How long does a Standard 11 course take to complete?
The Surface & Underground combo runs over three days. The Surface Mining Induction takes two days. Refresher courses are shorter, typically half a day to one day depending on the variant. Contact the Lennon team to confirm the duration for the course you need.
How long does a Standard 11 last?
Your Standard 11 is valid for five years. After that, you must complete a refresher before your Standard 11 induction expiry date to remain compliant and eligible to work on Queensland mine sites. Lennon offers multiple refresher options depending on your mine type.
How much does a Standard 11 course cost?
Course fees vary depending on the Standard 11 variant and delivery location. View We’s current fee schedule for up-to-date pricing, or contact the team directly for a quote.
Where can I complete a Standard 11 course in Queensland?
We deliver Standard 11 courses in Brisbane, Moranbah, and Emerald. Onsite delivery may also be available for larger groups. Contact the Lennon team to find the right option for you.
Standard 11 surface vs underground
Yes. Surface and underground mine workers must complete different competencies. The underground induction includes an additional unit covering escape from a hazardous situation unaided, which the surface induction does not require. Lennon offers courses for both pathways, as well as a combo that covers both in one program.
Is a coal board medical the same as a Standard 11?
No. They’re two different things you may need to work in Queensland mining. Your Standard 11 is a safety induction course that teaches you how to work safely on site. A coal board medical is a health check that confirms you’re physically fit for the role. One is training, the other is a medical, and most new coal mine workers need both.
