What Is an S123 Course?

The S123 supervisor course is a nationally recognised supervisor qualification required for anyone taking on a supervisory role on a Queensland coal mine site. It is a legal requirement under the Coal Mines Safety and Health Act 1999. It is not optional.

The S123 covers the safety and management responsibilities that come with supervising others on site. It includes three core units of competency from the RII training package: applying risk management processes, conducting safety and health investigations, and communicating information. Workers stepping into a supervisory role must hold this qualification before they can supervise others on site. We also offer the S123 refresher course and a combined S123 and G2 course for workers renewing or seeking both tickets.

S123 mining courses have been a mandatory requirement for Queensland mine supervisors since 2002. The qualification is recognised across Queensland coal mine sites and meets the requirements of the Coal Mines Safety and Health Advisory Committee.

Who Needs It?

S123 certification is required for any worker taking on a supervisory role on a Queensland mine site.

  • Workers who want to become supervisors in mining and need the formal qualification
  • New supervisors who have moved into a leadership role and need official certification
  • Experienced workers looking to formalise their supervisory skills and progress their career
  • Holders of old or expired certificates who need to renew to stay compliant
  • Contractors or workers leading teams at mining sites

If you are responsible for the safety of others on site, this course is most likely a mandatory requirement.
