Standard 11 Refresher – Surface & Underground
Description
The Standard 11 Refresher is the full renewal course for Queensland miners whose Standard 11 certification is due for update. It covers both surface and underground operations in a single course delivery, making it the right choice for workers who need to renew across both components.
Workers who operate across both surface and underground environments should book this course to satisfy the full renewal requirement under Queensland mining legislation. Completion leaves workers with a renewed, nationally recognised Standard 11 certification that keeps them compliant and eligible to work on Queensland mine sites. Trainers bring direct field experience from working across the Queensland mining industry.
Entry Requirements, Topics, Units & Delivery
The Standard 11 Refresher is for experienced mineworkers who already hold a previous Standard 11 (or equivalent) and have current or recent underground work experience. Bring government photo ID, long sleeves, long pants, steel-cap boots, and ensure you have a valid USI.
Topics include:
- Hazard ID and local risk control updates
- WHS responsibilities and site processes
- Communication protocols and isolation/permit changes
- Emergency preparedness and underground awareness
- CABA use, changeover procedures, and how S11 relates to site-specific onboarding
Delivery of Standard 11 Refresher is one full day (7:45am–4:00pm) combining classroom learning, scenario-based activities, and underground-specific practicals including the CABA changeover. Public sessions run in Emerald, with onsite group delivery available on request.
Assessment, Certification & Compliance
Standard 11 Refresher assessment includes targeted theory checks, practical demonstrations, and verification of prior learning, including review of your previous S11 Statement of Attainment and evidence of recent underground work.
Upon successful completion, participants receive either an updated Statement of Attainment or a Statement of Completion with logbook (if currency evidence is pending). Standard 11 Refresher certificates are emailed 2–3 business days after all requirements, payment, and USI verification are confirmed.

Career Opportunities After This Course
Surface Mine Worker
A surface mine worker carries out operational tasks on the surface of a coal mine site, working within Queensland’s regulated safety and compliance framework. Keeping the Standard 11 current through this refresher maintains their compliance and eligibility to continue in this role.
Underground Mine Worker
An underground mine worker operates below surface in a coal mining environment, with Standard 11 certification a core requirement for continued site access. The Standard 11 Refresher renews both components of the certification, keeping this worker compliant and eligible to remain underground.
Surface Operations Supervisor
A surface operations supervisor oversees personnel and production on the surface of a mine site, with responsibility for maintaining safe and compliant work conditions. Holding a current Standard 11 certification is a requirement for supervisors continuing in this role on Queensland mine sites.

In quis laborum quis consequat dolor anim proident tempor irure culpa excepteur incididunt culpa. What is a Standard 11 Refresher, and who requires it?
Standard 11 Refresher refers to the requirements of the Recognised Standard 11 “Training in coal mines” and the requirements of the Coal Mines Safety and Health Advisory Committee which states that all Coal Mine Workers must have the six or seven competencies listed from the RII training package.
For an Underground mine:
• RIIWHS201 Work Safely
• RIIERR205 Apply Initial First Aid
• RIIGOV201 Comply With Site Work Systems
• RIIRIS201 Conduct local Risk Assessment
• RIICOM201 Communicate in the Workplace
• RIIERR203 Escape From a Hazardous Situation Unaided
and for a Surface mine:
• RIIWHS201 Work Safely
• RIIERR205 Apply Initial First Aid
• RIIGOV201 Comply With Site Work Systems
• RIIRIS201 Conduct local Risk Assessment
• RIICOM201 Communicate in the Workplace
• RIIERR302 Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents
This induction, which was derived from the coal mines generic induction, was a recommendation from the Moura No2 mine inquiry.
What is the difference between this course and the Standard 11 Surface Refresher?
This course covers both surface and underground operations, while the Standard 11 Surface Refresher covers the surface component only. Workers who only operate on surface should book the surface refresher. Workers who need both components renewed should book this course.
Does my S11 need to be expired before I can book the refresher, or can I renew early?
You do not need to wait until your S11 has expired before booking. Renewing early is a straightforward way to stay ahead of your compliance date and avoid any gap in certification.
What do I need to bring on the day?
Bring valid photo identification and your USI. You do not need to bring your existing certification, but contact the team before your course date if you have questions about prior documentation.
