Standard 11 Surface Mining Induction
Description
The Standard 11 mining induction is the mandatory entry requirement for anyone commencing work on a Queensland coal mine site. This mining induction training applies to direct employees and contractors alike, covering the core safety and operational knowledge required before you set foot on site. Whether you are entering the industry for the first time or transitioning from another sector, our mining induction programs are designed to get you compliant and work-ready. The standard 11 induction covers the statutory requirements for surface coal operations in Queensland, and completing it earns you a nationally recognised standard 11 coal induction statement of attainment.
This standard 11 surface induction meets Queensland’s legislative requirements under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act and is accepted across Queensland coal mine sites. We have been delivering standard 11 mining induction Queensland training for 35 years, with a track record that spans thousands of workers across the coal sector. Our trainers bring direct industry experience to every session, giving you practical context alongside the required content. We deliver this s11 coal mine induction and standard 11 generic mining induction across three Queensland locations, keeping access realistic regardless of where you are based.

Career Opportunities After This Course
Surface Coal Miner
A surface coal miner operates equipment and carries out extraction tasks on open-cut and surface coal mine sites across Queensland. Completing the standard 11 induction is the statutory entry requirement that allows you to legally commence this role on a Queensland coal mine site.
Plant Operator (Surface)
A surface plant operator runs heavy mobile equipment including excavators, dozers, and haul trucks in surface mining environments. The standard 11 induction is required before you can operate plant on a Queensland coal mine site, regardless of your prior experience.
Mining Contractor
A mining contractor works on coal mine sites in a trade or specialist capacity, typically engaged through a principal contractor or mine operator. This standard 11 induction meets the mining contractor induction requirement that Queensland mine sites impose before contractors can access site.
General Surface Operations Worker
A general surface operations worker supports the day-to-day running of a coal mine site across roles including maintenance, logistics, and administration conducted on site. Completing the standard 11 induction is required before you can carry out any work, including non-operational roles, on a Queensland surface coal mine site.

In quis laborum quis consequat dolor anim proident tempor irure culpa excepteur incididunt culpa. What is a Standard 11 induction, and who requires it?
The term Standard 11 induction refers to the requirements of the Recognised Standard 11 “Training in coal mines” and the requirements of the Coal Mines Safety and Health Advisory Committee which states that all Coal Mine Workers must have the six or seven competencies listed from the RII training package.
For an Underground mine:
• RIIWHS201 Work Safely
• RIIERR205 Apply Initial First Aid
• RIIGOV201 Comply With Site Work Systems
• RIIRIS201 Conduct local Risk Assessment
• RIICOM201 Communicate in the Workplace
• RIIERR203 Escape From a Hazardous Situation Unaided
and for a Surface mine:
• RIIWHS201 Work Safely
• RIIERR205 Apply Initial First Aid
• RIIGOV201 Comply With Site Work Systems
• RIIRIS201 Conduct local Risk Assessment
• RIICOM201 Communicate in the Workplace
• RIIERR302 Respond to Local Emergencies and Incidents
This induction, which was derived from the coal mines generic induction, was a recommendation from the Moura No2 mine inquiry.
What is the difference between the Standard 11 Induction and the Standard 11 Surface and Underground combo?
This course covers surface coal operations only. If your role requires you to work in underground environments as well, you will need the combined surface and underground version of the Standard 11. Contact us before booking if you are unsure which applies to your site.
Is the Standard 11 the same as a mining contractor induction?
Yes. The Standard 11 is the qualification that satisfies the mining contractor induction requirement on Queensland coal mine sites. Regardless of how your employer or host site refers to it, the Standard 11 induction is what you need.
Does the Standard 11 induction cover both coal and metalliferous mining?
No. The Standard 11 is specific to coal mining operations in Queensland. If you are entering a metalliferous or other non-coal mine site, a different induction applies and you should confirm the requirement with your employer before booking.
How long does the Standard 11 mining induction take to complete?
The standard 11 induction course duration varies depending on delivery format. Contact us directly for current session length as this can differ across our Queensland locations.
What do I need to bring on the day?
Bring a valid photo identification document and any prior training records your employer has asked you to present. We will confirm the full requirements when you book.
