Description

The Learning from Disasters (Stage 2) workshop is a one-day, practical program designed to help workers, supervisors, and safety leaders translate lessons from major mining incidents and High Potential Incidents (HPIs) into safer day-to-day decisions on site. Participants examine disaster case studies, analyse breakdowns in controls, and learn how those lessons apply directly to their own mine’s systems, procedures, and critical risk management processes.

This workshop is non-accredited and tailored to Queensland mining practice. No units of competency are awarded and the NRT logo is not used. Participants who complete the program receive a Workshop Certificate of Completion for Stage 2, which complements the mandatory Stage 1 SIMTARS eLearning (required prior to attendance and completed directly through SIMTARS).

The program is suitable for coal and resource industry personnel involved in supervision, statutory functions, frontline leadership, and catastrophic risk management.

Participants must complete the Stage 1 SIMTARS eLearning before attending this workshop and must bring evidence of completion on the day. Basic language, literacy, and numeracy skills are required for participation in discussions and group activities, and reasonable adjustment or support can be provided where appropriate.

The workshop is delivered face-to-face over one full day (typically 7:45am–4:00pm) and incorporates facilitated discussions, scenario-based group tasks, and guided analysis of real historical mining disasters. Public intakes are scheduled throughout the year, with onsite delivery available for groups by arrangement.

Key content areas include:

  • Case study analysis of major mining disasters and HPIs
  • Hazard identification and critical control verification
  • Leadership decision-making under pressure, including communication failures and permit interactions
  • Change management, work planning, and barrier erosion
  • Emergency readiness, escalation, response, and recovery aligned to site procedures

The workshop supports onboarding programs, safety culture initiatives, risk management frameworks, and leadership capability development across coal operations and related resource sectors.

As a non-accredited workshop, there is no formal assessment. Learning is demonstrated through case study tasks, participation in discussions, and completion of a short action plan that can be taken back to toolbox meetings, supervisor coaching sessions, or site safety reviews.

Certification:

A Workshop Certificate of Completion for Stage 2 is issued once:

  • Participation in the workshop is confirmed
  • Required Stage 1 evidence has been provided
  • Payment has been finalised

Sites may request proof of both Stage 1 SIMTARS eLearning and Stage 2 workshop completion for onboarding—participants should keep both for their records.

Quick facts:

  • Duration: 1 day (approx. 7:45am–4:00pm)
  • Mode: Face-to-face workshop with group activities
  • Location: Public programs as scheduled; onsite delivery by arrangement
  • Recognition: Non-accredited workshop (Certificate of Completion only)
  • Prerequisite: Completion of Stage 1 SIMTARS eLearning

Compliance:

Lennon Training (RTO 1674) provides all required pre-enrolment information and maintains transparent fees, refunds, complaints and appeals, privacy, and student support policies. As this is a non-accredited workshop, a USI is not required.
