RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations
Description
Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations is the nationally recognised vocational qualification for workers in Queensland’s underground coal sector. It covers the full range of skills and knowledge required to work competently in an underground coal environment.
This qualification is suited to workers already operating underground who want to formalise their experience, and to those entering the sector who want a credential that reflects the full scope of the role. No single unit or short course delivers what this qualification does.
Workers who complete the RII40426 leave with a credential that is formally recognised across Queensland mine sites and carries weight with employers across the sector. This satisfies the qualification standard for a range of underground coal roles and positions holders for advancement within the industry. We are one of a small number of RTOs in Queensland actively delivering this qualification. Trainers bring direct underground coal experience, having worked in the field before moving into training.
Entry Requirements, Topics, Units & Delivery
Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations is designed for experienced underground coal mineworkers who intend to apply for their Deputy’s ticket and perform ERZ Controller duties on an operational underground coal mine. Due to the advanced level of knowledge required, participants must have a minimum of three (3) years underground coal mining experience across outbye, longwall and development environments.
To complete the Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations, Learners must have current access to a working underground coal mine and access to site documentation normally used by an ERZ Controller or Supervisor, including SHMS, PHMPs, and operational management plans. Basic language, literacy and numeracy skills are required for assessment. All participants must supply photo ID and a valid USI.
Training focuses on the application and monitoring of:
- Underground coal mining legislation
- Atmosphere (gas) management plans
- Strata management plans
- Operational and emergency management plans
Delivery is via flexible distance learning, supported by structured workbooks, electronic assessment submission, and trainer support. Learners complete theory alongside workplace-based assignments that directly reference their own mine’s systems and procedures.
